There's a West Wing episode where Leo tells Bartlett, "You're going to open your mouth and lift houses off the ground. Whole houses, clear off the ground." This blog used to be about writing a dissertation -- although I'm not sure it was ever really about that. But now it's about my life as a brand new assistant professor, still hoping to lift whole houses off the ground. It's academy meets Ab.

Literary Loss
Kurt Vonnegut died yesterday at the age of 84. I don't know enough about his work to write a fitting farewell (nor is that my job), but there are write-ups on msn and the NY Times. Vonnegut was -- is -- one of my brother's favorite authors and my brother-in-law had the privilege of meeting him in what I think was some sort of writing workshop. According to Jim, Vonnegut was surly, sarcastic, and hilarious.
