eateries

I dig where we live. I like the townhouse, I like the town, I like the area, the geography. The people tend toward very polite. The weather? Not a big fan of summer, but fall has been okay. The Flint Hills are beautiful. The Konza Prairie is beautiful. Our neighborhood is mostly quiet. I like campus. It's very campus-y. Big limestone buildings. Lovely colleagues. This is all good.

But I miss good restaurants. I know we didn't take advantage of it enough in New England. We knew when we were there that we weren't taking enough advantage of it. But that is starkly clear now. I miss shrimp curry at Taste of India. I miss sushi at Sake. I miss fresh seafood in general. I miss Flatbreads. I miss Wings. I miss Coat of Arms. Three Chimneys. The Friendly Toast. The Stockpot. Dante's. La Festa. The Portsmouth Brewery.

Maybe there are better restaurants here than I'm giving credit for. I mean, we've hardly explored the place. The Jamaican place was disappointing, that's for sure. But there was a pretty decent -- and pretty trendy -- place downtown that I went to. Granted, I've forgotten the name. And Four Olives is supposed to be very good. It might be slightly outside of our regular price range. Right now, though, the absolute best place in town to eat (that we've actually been to) is the So Long Saloon. So Long is a fantastic burger joint (although I usually get my sandwich with chicken, instead). I love the Crank It Up and Head South sandwich. Chicken breast, pepperjack cheese, roasted green chilis, pico de gallo, and some sort of sauce. Their onion rings are fantastic. Their fries are very very good. And I even like their fried pickles.

New goals:  explore some new restaurants in town.
