The Emmys

It's a guilty pleasure, for sure. But I love awards shows. I don't know why. They're disgusting and an absolutely unjustifiable expense in a time when not enough people have jobs or health care or a place to sleep. I know this. I know it and I still watch. In short, I kinda suck.

That said, I finally got around to watching the Emmys (have I mentioned my deep and abiding love of my DVR?). Not bad, not bad. Ryan Seacrest was hardly an excellent host, but he wasn't as terrible as I thought he'd be.

Here are my comments, concerns, and observations:

1. When the heck did Felicity Huffman get so incredibly frighteningly thin? I don't watch Desperate Housewives, so maybe it's been a gradual progression, but she is absolutely skin on bones. I can count her ribs from both the front and back. She looks ill. I'm concerned. Of course, it's not just her. Turn on most t.v. shows (including America's Next Top Model, which was on last night) and you'll see scary skinny women. But I love Felicity Huffman (Sports Night, anyone?) and this makes me sad for her.

2. Loved when Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Carell celebrated Steve's not winning. It was the only thing all night that made me laugh out loud.

3. Also loved Katherine Heigl's acceptance speech. I'm not sure why. She seems like someone I could get along with.

4. And T.R. Knight whispering in her ear before she accepted her award was incredibly sweet.

Okay, gotta run. Just thought I should give you something fluffy and non-academic in the face of the job market and my dissertation posts.
